The War Against Air Pollution

Many Americans today believe that air pollution is constantly getting worse. Air pollution statistics however, show that vast improvements are being made in the United States. Through Government regulations and more conscious efforts by the American public; air pollution statistics actually show slight decreases. EPA statistics show about a 48% decrease in air pollutant emissions across the board. This is a good sign for many Americans who believe that the government hasn't made significant strides in the battle for a cleaner environment.
There are about 2 million premature deaths each year caused by air pollution. This has to be taken seriously by the American public and our government. Polices such as the Clean Air Act have been adopted to try to regulate these harmful emissions into the air. This policy will attempt to regulate the amount of harmful emissions that a company is allowed to release in a monthly period. Although it has come under some major scrutiny by the American people because it could in essence cause business to have to close their doors; the Clean Air Act could become a useful weapon in decreasing air pollution.
The major weapon that we have in this effort has always been education. A well educated public can take the facts that they know and have been taught and through conscious efforts can decide for themselves what decisions either personal or government mandated will improve the quality of the air that they breathe. We as a people in general want to live a healthy lifestyle. However an uneducated people group can not make a conscious decision about the air quality around them. This is where we as a  society we need to band together to make sure that we educate the public of the harmful effects of air pollution. It is not just the governments job to improve our environment; it is a group effort. Together through the voices of  concerned citizens and a government who is willing to do whatever it takes to improve the lives of their people; without costing American jobs in the process  could significantly change the world.

Make Your Business More Efficient With Utility Tracking Software |

This is a typical utility pole found all over ...Image via Wikipedia
Make Your Business More Efficient With Utility Tracking Software Business. More companies are keeping track of their utility use age with tracking software packages. Here is a list of some of these software packages.

EnergyCap- Offers extensive reporting, charting, and graphing tools that help to find trouble spots in your utility use age. EnergyCap tracking solutions can help businesses handle their utility use age with features such as work flow manager and the ability to track standard and deregulated bills.

Energy Expert- is designed like a virtual energy model of your building and can compare energy use variations against normal use age. The comparison can be used to give details about any energy overuse. You will receive a notification link to the data at hand to compare. Energy Expert also provides a calender to view stored historical views of your utility use age.

Utility Manager- Captures data for analysis and reports the results that can show use age and costs. This allows you to measure your energy saving efforts.  Utility Manager also comes in two different packages based on the size of your business.

These business solutions can help your business save money and provide a clean energy efficient image. These are not the only utility tracking software products available; just a few to consider. I first recommend studying what would be beneficial  to your business. Then what would be best for the size of your business.

Green Genius Biodegradable Kitchen Bags

Green Genius has designed a biodegradable kitchen bag; so that consumers can have a strong plastic bag that is guaranteed to breakdown in a landfill leaving no trace of plastic behind. The solution they found was a plastic bag that is completely edible by microbes.

How the Green Genius Biodegradable Bags work:

Step One: They combine plastic with a proprietary additive called EcoPure that bonds organic “nutrients” to the plastic’s molecular structure. The addition of this additive allows the plastic to be eaten by microbes, making the whole bag biodegradable.

Step Two: Whenever a Green Genius plastic bag is disposed of in a microbe-rich environment like a landfill, the microbes are attracted to the embedded “nutrients” in the plastic.

Step Three: Microbes feed on the nutrients, which actually converts the plastic into simpler organic matter like sugars, fatty acids and amino acids.

Step Four: The bag is now entirely edible by microbes, which attracts even more microbes, and a feast ensues!

Step Five: Microbes continue to feed until only the simplest organic matter remains — water, bio-gas (carbon dioxide and methane) and bio-mass (humus).

*The drawstrings are also made from 40% recycled content and are as durable as regular drawstrings.*

Green Genius biodegradable kitchen bags are available through this site on Amazon. Give them a try and see for yourself what these bags can do to help make your home a green home.

Top Five Green Companies in the U.S.

1. Hewlett Packard- Was the first major IT company to report GHG emissions. They have also implemented programs to reduce GHG emissions and to remove toxic materials from their products. Hewlett Packard, even though they are still targeted by environmental regulators has made great strides in protecting the environment.

2. Dell- Ranks 4th among the top U.S. corporate users of renewable energy. All of Dell's corporate laptops and desktops consume 25% less energy. Dell also leads the nation with it's product take back and recycling programs.

3. Johnson & Johnson- Has made a strong commitment to climate change and environmental management. They have not however pledged to become carbon neutral. They do however; have the largest fleet of hybrid vehicles in the world.

4. Intel- Is the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in the U.S. Energy efficiency has become a major focus for Intel. Rather than solely focusing on speed they have focused on reducing the energy consumption of their chips. They have also iimplemented programs to reduce waste and release of toxins.

5. IBM- All  new employees undergo environmental awareness training. They are also the only company to receive the EPA's Climate Protection award twice. IBM's environmental policies have been around since 1971.

These 5 major corporations are paving the road in environmental protection for other companies to follow. In the years to come I look forward to seeing the major changes that both these companies and other companies will be making to protect the environment.

GREEN LIVING TIPS

On April 20th 2010 our country suffered from the greatest oil spill it has ever known. The Transocean Ltd exploded into flames releasing hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil into the Gulf. This catastrophe alone should teach about how fragile our resources can be. Making small lifestyle changes from the products that we buy to certain decisions that we make in our homes and businesses can greatly improve the environment. Here I will discuss some of the changes that we can make to improve our health and environment.

Recycle:
-Aluminum Cans
-Newspapers
-Plastics
-Steel
-Organic Waste
-Glass
-Other paper Products
-Toner Cartridges

All of these items can be recycled instead of ending up at a dump and withering the environment. You can usually find a recycling center for these items in your town but if not check with your city waste department for more information.

-Turn down your hot water heater. Your hot water heater accounts for 20-30% of your homes energy. Turn your hot water heater down to around 130 degrees. Turning your hot water heater down could save somewhere from 7-8% on your energy use age (which saves you money).

-Use latex paint instead of oil based paint.Oil based paints are toxic and produce nasty pollutants into the atmosphere. Use latex paint and let the excess evaporate outside for one year. Then dispose of the rest in your trash or donate it to someone who could use it.

-Use rechargeable batteries. Batteries are made of heavy metals and mercury. Both of these materials are major contaminants at dump sites. Rechargeable batteries extract the mercury and cadmium for reuse.

-Use low flush toilets. Forty percent or the pure water in your household is flushed down the toilet.

-Recycle your motor oil. 350 million gallons of motor oil in up in the environment every year. A good portion of that ends up in our rivers and streams. When you get your oil changed ask them if they recycle old motor oil. If you change your own oil; take your old oil to a oil station that recycles old motor oil.

-Switch to fluorescent lighting. Fluorescent bulbs last longer that traditional bulbs and use 1/4 of the energy.

-Use Cloth Diapers. Cloth diapers take up 1-2% of American landfills. Disposable diapers are made from pulp wood; which means more trees are getting cut down to make the diapers. There are also several hundred known diseases from human excrement that end up in our landfills and into the environment.

These are just a few helpful tips to change your home or business to a more healthy environment for you and for your family or colleagues. These simple changes may not seem like much but when everyone pitches in and decides to make their environment a more healthy one; they can do wonders for the environment.
